About Me
The Divine Word Missionaries:
Our Congregations signature is SVD ( Societas Verbi Divini). In English, it means Society of the Divine Word. We are called Divine Word Missionaries, popularly SVD.
The SVD is an international religious – missionary congregation of Priests and Brothers. It is founded by St. Arnold Janssen in Steyl, Holland, on September 8, 1875.
A Divine Word Missionary (SVD) is either a Priest or a Brother.
An SVD Religious Brother, like the SVD priest, lives a life of evangelical poverty, consecrated chastity and apostolic obedience. He serves the Church through his God-given talents and professional training. He does his job with a difference-not for salary-but out of love for God and his fellows. Almost all Brothers specialize in something: building, counseling, administration, mechanics, agriculture, i.t., teaching, community organizing, health care, accounting, etc
The SVDs are working in over 70 countries in all t he continents of the world.
In the year 2006, the SVD is:
- considered the largest "Ad Gentes" congregation, i.e. a congregation sending missionaries to countries away from their own country origin.
- the 7th largest male religious missionary congregation at the moment.
- the only male congregation among the top ten which has a positive growth rate.
The SVD arrived in the Philippines in the year 1909 and is present from Cagayan Valley to Zamboanga.
Of all SVD Priests and Brothers, around 600 are Filipinos. Among the Filipinos, 150 are working abroad. The SVDs, as witnesses to the Word, are engaged, among others, with the following works: education, parish administration, biblical formation, mass media of communication, mission animation, formation of youth, chaplaincy, formation of future priests and religious-missionaries and promotion of justice , peace, and integrity of creation (community organizing, empowerment of cultural communities, care of street children, prostituted woman, and other marginalized sectors of society, care of mother earth and the universe).
